Risalvato concurred I had a case last week where the person was in an Internet caf but there was a wastepaper basket with plastic sticking out in the back right-hand corner, which was very distracting.Take musiknote of angles and lightingMake sure that you have angled your Webcam correctly so that the interviewer isnt staring at your chest instead of your face. Stay centered in the frame of the camera. You do need to have enough lighting to be able to have eye contact, Risalvato said. I generally coach the person to put my window right below his or her Web camera so that their eye is naturally going to look at me. It can be a difficult for someone whos not familiar with working with this kind of media to train ones eye to look directly into the Webcam.

Common ways folks solve this problem is having a separate space in your house where work happens and where your home life happens. Build routines that separate work from personal time. Every manager does a weekly 1-on-1 with their direct teammates. Part of those weekly 1-on-1s is to help gauge someones excitement about their current work. Additionally, the team helps keep an eye on everyone as well. If someone posts messages in Slack outside their normal hours someone will likely ask what they are doing working. Its not uncommon to see a fellow teammate encourage someone to step away from Slack and go enjoy their time off. The benefits are plentiful: higher quality, faster production, less waste, and greater safety (removing employees from hazardous working conditions, handling heavy parts). Robots are used mostly in automotive and aerospace, especially for the handling and assembly of large parts. As companies continue to see big benefits from using robots on the factory floor, they are starting to invest in smarter, smaller, more collaborative robots for more delicate or complex operations. The following is a list of the top robot jobs that are currently emerging in factories. 1) Drilling and fastening Manual drilling typically requires three steps, and can take even longer with exotic materials like titanium. Robots with sophisticated vision systems can perform drilling in a single pass, dramatically cutting labor costs and improving speed of production. 2) Inspection With more complex assemblies and tight tolerances, accurate inspections are a must, both in-process and for the final product. Robots equipped with cameras, laser scanners, and ultrasonic and metrology equipment can quickly inspect products and record the data. 3) Welding Metal parts welding for assembly (for example, turbines) must be performed with precision. When using exotic metals, such as titanium and nickel-alloys in motors,industrial robots are a must in order to do effective and accurate welds, states Mathieu Bélanger-Barrette, a production engineer at Robotiq, a manufacturer of industrial robots. By putting robotic arms on rails, working cells can cover distances from 30 to 40 feet, several stories high, says Bélanger-Barrette. Since painting robots are equipped with flowmeters, industrial painting robotscan apply material without leaving behind drips, inconsistencies, or overspray. 5) Collaborative assembly Advances in artificial intelligence, computer vision, microelectromechanical systems sensors, and semiconductor technologies have enabled industrial and service robots to work alongside humans to help assemble products across a wide range of industries, from aircraft engines to delicate electronics. These robots can almost be the boss, with their vision systems and other sensors, they can see if their human partners are assembling products correctly. March of the Robots More advanced generations of collaborative robots are on the way: smart, mobile, collaborative, and more adaptable. Humans are not strictly necessary, as robots can collaborate effectively with other robots. For example, Great Wall Motors, a Chinese automotive plant, operates a robot-to-robot production line that is one of the most productive ever created. One robot handles and positions the panel, and the other welds it into place. This robotic line performs more than 4,000 welding operations on the car body in an 86-second cycle time, including the transferring operations, says Bélanger-Barrette. In 2015, Foxconn, the Taiwanese company that manufactures the iPhone and other major electronics devices, announced it plans to achieve 30 percent automation of its Chinese factories by 2020. Foxconn also said it had automated away 60,000 jobs in one of its factories, part of an ongoing process to replace humans responsible for many of the manufacturing tasks associated with our operations. Job losses from robot adaption are a real concern. According to the World Economic Forum, current robot trends could lead to a net employment impact of more than 5.1 million jobs lost to disruptive labor market changes over the period 20152020. And these arent just factory jobs. Positions most at risk for being replaced in the future are administrative and routine white-collar office functions. As robots become less costly and more accessible, writes reporter James R. Hagerty in The Wall Street Journal, they should help level the playing field between smaller manufacturers and corporate giants. By reducing labor costs through automation, the U.S. and other high-wage countries may be able to bring back some of the processes that have been ceded to China, Mexico, and other countries with vast armies of lower-paid workers, says Hagerty. In December 2016, the IDC released its Worldwide Robotics 2017 Predictions report, which highlights key drivers that will likely shape the development of robotics in the planning horizon of 2017 through 2020. Robotics will continue to accelerate innovation, thus disrupting and changing the paradigm of business operations in many industries, writes Jing Bing Zhang, research director for IDC for the Asia/Pacific region. We expect to see stronger growth of robotics adoption outside the traditional manufacturing factory floor, including logistics, health, utilities, and resources industries. What does it mean to be great What does it mean to be great What is most obvious is also often most concealed. Much of what we think we know has depths never ventured to because we mistake the surface for the bottom. Such is the case, especially, with human potential.There are two major theories of how history is shaped, the distinction between them being the degree to which individual humans have any say in it. The first is the deterministic one, arguing that everything that has ever been is a product of a long chain of causes and effects, one leading to the next, without any gaps- and it says that itâs not individuals that shape history but randomness, which particular individuals have no control over, creating the conditions for them to rise to challenges and for things to happen at exactly the right place at exactly the right time. The second theory takes the free-will stance, suggesting that if it werenât for certain figures like, say, Alexander the Great or Charles Darwin and their determination, with or without the supporting cond itions, the world would be different.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The truth, as is often the case, likely lies in some nuanced paradox that sits between these theories. Thomas Carlyle, a 19th-century polymath, made his case for the latter with his famous work On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and The Heroic in History, coining what is known as The Great Man theory. To study history, according to Carlyle, is essentially to read the biographies of the big names that we hear again and again. The novelist Leo Tolstoy, of course, argued otherwise, using War and Peace to illustrate that itâs not the big names that change things but many small ones we never hear of. The historian Will Durant, too, argued otherwise, favoring a version of the former theory and the role of situations rather than any particular persons.In each version, however, the question that boils to the surface is this: To what degree can individual humans alter the course of history? And more interestingly, the implication of this question?- ?at least as framed by Carlyle and those favoring the choice of free-will?- ?then, becomes: Human greatness is something that is measured by size and impact and influence.Now, this idea of greatness is so banal on the surface that even talking about it feels hollow. Itâs a definition we have all internalized, and while we may have our own subjective lens through which we conceptualize it, for the most part, all of our own definitions are an extension of this cultural definition that partly stems from this dilemma. Greatness is action. Greatness is visibility. Greatness is more. Greatness is legacy. Everything that augments our image in the eyes of others can be called great. And if we stop here, then maybe what is seemingly obvious remains obvious: The word âgreatnessâ has a very particular definition, and when enough conditions meet it, we can feel good about using it. But what if we dig a layer deeper, to something less concrete but, perhaps, a little more sincere?Remains of the Day is a novel by Kazuo Ishiguro. Itâs about a butler named Stevens, and Stevens, after years of unwavering service at an old English country house sets off on a road trip to see an old colleague. Much of the book is narrated from his own point-of-view, jumping between scenes of present day and scenes conjured out of memories and flashbacks.There are many themes and threads running through the chapters, but one of the core ones concern work and dignity. In particular, Stevens spends a good portion of the narration attempting to figure out what it means to be a great butler. This question, of course, begins innocently enough but then evolves into such an unraveling of his identity that the distance between where he started and where he ends leaves behind only more questions. Nonetheless, early on, there is a definition of greatness he gives, a s he surveys the countryside of 20th-century England, wondering what makes it so different, that captures an essence that translates beyond the grip of nature:âAnd yet what precisely is this âgreatnessâ? Just where, or in what, does it lie? I am quite aware it would take a far wiser head than mine to answer such a question, but it I were forced to hazard a guess, I would say that it is the very lack of obvious drama and spectacle that sets the beauty of our land apart. What is pertinent is the calmness of that beauty, its sense of restraint. It is as though the land knows of its own beauty, of its own greatness, and feels no need to shout it.âHistory, in a sense, is a drama and a spectacle. When we read about it in books, it may be discussed as a series of interconnected facts, but in actuality, given the various complexities that arise when documenting something like the past?- ?such as: the very subjective perspective of the writers, the limitations of existing knowledge, the exaggeration of cause and effect, etc.?- ?what we end up with is more a story than a science. And in this story, there are characters, good and bad, big and small, who do things. And if these characters happen to be the main ones, we measure their greatness according to the definition handed down to us.All of this changes, however, if we make a simple switch: If instead of thinking of greatness as a definition, we were to think of it?- ?first and foremost?- ?as a feeling we experience when we sense something. And if we stay with this switch, the ability to evoke this feeling in others would be the truest and purest measure of greatness. Rather than using history, or legacy, or praise, or external validation as measuring sticks?- ?all things that can be manipulated with different forms of excess?- ?we did the exact opposite: measure greatness not by what is present but by what is absent and what that absence says about everything that remains when the excess is stripped away.One thing that becomes very clear to me any time I spend a sustained amount of time in nature, and around animals, is how bad humans are as collective designers. If you walk around in a relatively untouched forest or jungle, actually looking at the patterns surrounding you, comparing them to, say, the average downtown city, itâs hard not to be moved?- ?itâs like everything just fits, a puzzle that solves itself in recursive loop, where your attention isnât forced but quietly invited. Evolution has slowly stripped away the inessential, leaving only what is necessary. And what is necessary is, of course, skilled, because itâs survived the trials and tribulations of time and competition, but that skill isnât any more visible than it needs to be?- ?and that, as Stevens noted, is exactly why its visibility is so potent to our senses.The same can be said about people: Those who are truly great donât fit definitions and categorizations of what it means to be great; rather, they a re great by virtue of the feelings they evoke in other people. They are skilled, and they know who they are, and what they are capable of, and that can be picked up in all of the unconscious signals that the human brain uses to create our mental and emotional impression of the world at any moment. And, paradoxically, the less they do, the less effort they exert into showing what they know, the more their base competence shines through. And perhaps even more paradoxically, all of this eventually molds those external definitions and categorizations of what it means to be great as a byproduct.When we find ourselves around people like this, we generally have a hard time pinpointing exactly what it is that makes them different. We sense that something is indeed different because the emotions they evoke in us tell us so but rarely are we able to fully verbalize what exactly that âsomethingâ is. All we are left with is an intuition that there is more here?- ?in this space in front of us?- ?than is visible to the naked eye.History can make people great, but most people are great in spite of history. They are great not because of what they are able to outwardly project about themselves, but more so, they are great because they donât need to project anything at all. They show nothing more than what is. We are taught to watch out for distracted drivers when walking, but a new report is asking us to be more mindful of our own addictively distracting devices.This yearâs Governors Highway Safety Association report found that the number of pedestrians killed by cars is rising, and our smartphone use could be a cause.Almost 6,000 pedestrians killed in crashesThe GHSA report found that the number of pedestrians killed in motor vehicle crashes nationwide in 2017 was 5,984 - a total that has stayed the same for the second straight year. While other traffic deaths have fallen, pedestrians being fatally struck by cars is still on the rise.The number of pedestrian fatalities has increased by 27% from 2007 to 2016, while all other traffic deaths decreased by 14%. Alarmingly, pedestrian deaths now make up a larger proportion of traffic fatalities than they have at any time over past 33 years. More than two-th irds of these deaths are occurring in the night when drivers do not clearly see pedestrians.Whatâs causing this spike? The GHSA has no clear answers, but it suspects that an increase in marijuana use and smartphone distraction could be factors. In D.C. and the seven states that have legalized marijuana, pedestrian fatalities rose by 16.4%, while in other states that number decreased by 5.8%.But our addictive phones in our pockets are also to blameâMore recent factors contributing to the increase in pedestrian fatalities might include ⦠the increasing use of smartphones, which can be a significant source of distraction regardless of travel mode,â the report states.The number of cellphone-related, emergency department visits has risen in parallel with cell phone use in the United States, according to the GHSA report. In many of those ER visits, the cause was the person being distracted while texting on their phone.If you are not going to be mindful of texting while walking, th e government may be mindful on your behalf. Recognizing that we are not going to regulate our distraction, the city of Montclair, California, has banned looking at your phone while crossing streets. In Honolulu, a city known for its high number of pedestrian deaths, you can get fined for crossing the street while looking at your phone.Bottom-line: When you are looking at your phone, you are not looking at your surroundings. You are more likely to jaywalk or cross the street without looking both ways. And for too many of us, that distracted choice proves fatal.
